The Best Winter Plants For Color And Warmth

What are some winter plants that are great for decorating your home during those cold, dreary winter months? You have a lot to choose from, but here are a few of my favorites.

#1: BROMELIADS

This is a great plant for adding a bit of color and warmth to your home. Bromeliads don’t require a lot of sunlight or water, meaning they thrive in the wintertime. You still need to keep it warm enough that it doesn’t die, but assuming you have central heating and cooling that shouldn’t be an issue.

Bromeliads are great because they come in several different colors. You can find them in pink, purple, orange, yellow and red. These do a great job of contrasting the usual dark colors like gray that we think of during the winter.

#2: ZEBRA PLANTS

This is a tropical plant so it needs a lot of humidity. They tend to do well in bathrooms which are naturally more humid than the rest of the house.

Zebra plants are always green with white or yellow stripes- hence the name. The contrast is what makes this plant so beautiful. They aren’t dull colors. They really pop against the dark green leaves, making it a beautiful way to add color and warmth to your home during the cold, dark winter.

#3: PEACE LILIES

These plants are popular because they’re easy to care for and improve the air quality of your home. They always have green leaves and white flowers, so they aren’t the most colorful plants. But the green is always a welcome color in your home during the winter, and the white flower works well with most winter decor. After all, you can’t really go wrong with white.

One thing to keep in mind is that peace lilies don’t need much water. If you’re watering it every single week, that’s probably a bit excessive. Instead just check it once a week and add water if it’s dry.

#4: ZZ PLANT

This plant is often touted as the easiest to keep alive. While it doesn’t have some of the bright and beautiful colors as others (such as bromeliads,) it does great in low-light conditions. Do you have a room in the house that gets very little sunlight? For example, maybe you have some rooms in the basement with no windows, or you have tall trees on one side of the house. Those are perfect places to place a ZZ Plant.

#5: CLIVIA

Do you have a room that gets a bit chilly? Maybe you have a covered porch, sunroom or just keep your basement chilly. These are great places to keep a clivia. Clivia plants like to have the air get a little chilly, as that’s when their flowers bloom. Their flowers are usually yellow or orange and go a long way to adding some warmth to your home.

There are plenty of other great winter plants for color and warmth to consider. Christmas cacti are beautiful, succulents add a nice desert-feel to your home, and snake plants are super easy to maintain. Without fail, my friends and family always ask the same question this time of year – “Do you have any Christmas decorating tips?” I wanted to share a few of my favorites today.

Christmas Decorating Tip #1: Change the Tableware

It’s fine to use the same tableware for most of the year. Maybe you pull out your china or something nicer for parties, but most people use the same stuff throughout the year.

Christmas is different. It’s a great time to spread some cheer and add a bit more color to your table by investing in new tableware. From plates and cups to napkins and centerpieces, you can level up the entire kitchen table.

The best part is you aren’t locked into a certain type of tableware. Does your family love reindeer? You can find reindeer tableware. More of a Santa-loving family with little kids? Again, no problem.

Christmas Decorating Tip #2: Replace Your Candlesticks

If you don’t have a lot of candles around the house, this one may not apply as much. Notice I said as much, because maybe now’s a good time for you to get some!

Most people keep neutral-colored candles throughout the year. You just can’t go wrong with an off-white candle, as it goes well in just about any room. Christmas is a great time to replace those white candles with something more festive. Red and green candles usually do the trick, and I recommend a mixture of both.

You don’t necessarily have to burn the candles. Some people love the sight and smell of burning candles this time of year. Others don’t like the smell and just want to enjoy the candles as decoration. Either way is fine.

Christmas Decorating Tip #3: The Power of Figurines

Putting a few Christmas figurines around the house can help you and your guests get into the spirit. The obvious example of a Christmas-y figurine is Santa Claus, but there are more to consider. Nutcrackers, such as the one in the famous play, are tied to Christmas. Reindeer are another great choice, It doesn’t end there though. Anything that makes you feel like celebrating the Christmas season will work. Polar bears, penguins, cardinals, snowmen, Christmas elves – it’s up to you.

Tip #4: Use Ornaments and Christmas Trees Throughout the House

Christmas ornaments and trees are most of us only have out once a year. As soon as we see them, our first thought is of Christmas.

There’s no reason you should limit yourself to the placement of these beautiful symbols. Use them throughout the house!

– Put large glass jars full of ornaments on shelves or dressers

– Place small fake Christmas trees on the mantle, small tables or countertops

– Have a bowl of ornaments in the middle of your coffee table

You don’t need to do this on every single table of course, but spreading these throughout the

house will do wonders.

Tip #5: Use the Power of Christmas Flowers

Last but not least, let’s just acknowledge how great poinsettias are. Known as the Christmas Flower, poinsettias add such a vibrant red to your living space they can’t be ignored. My favorite place to put them is by the fireplace, but don’t limit yourself. They also look great as centerpieces, on the mantle, on side tables, or even just standing up in the corner. Restore Your Hardwood Floors With These Tips

If your hardwood floors begin to look dreary, they could be new again through coating your floors. A coat to maintain the floor will need a cleaning on the current finish, then sanding it in a light manner. You will just need an application of a new coat of hardwood floor finish after doing this.

We recommend a complete sanding and refinish when there is a scratch, dent and other damage to the hard wood flooring. We also recommend this process if the finish is worn away and the bare wood is now exposed. This might be the case if you buy a fixer upper home. And there is an additional benefit to doing a complete sand and refinish. Sanding the floor back to raw wood is the best way to change the coloring of the flooring.

Make Sure to Not Use the Incorrect Tools

Wood floor restoration begins when you sand the flooring. This will strip away the finish from before and take out the surface level dents and scuffs. However, if you attempt to sand the floor with the power supplies you have at home, the floors will most likely be sanded uneven. It is possible that you can greatly damage the hardwood by doing this.

Bright Colors Are Making a Coming Back

Neutrals such as beige, gray, and taupe are still popular. But we are seeing more bright colors on walls and in fabrics, especially in blues. Rich cobalt and vibrant turquoise are very popular. You should ayer intense hues together to add warmth to any room. If it starts to be too dark, just throw in some additional lighting to brighten it up.

Wallpaper Is Not Going Away

Wallpaper will continue to grow in popularity. If you are reluctant to do a whole room, just cover a single wall for small a pop of color, texture, or pattern. And lots of people are now papering powder rooms. You could even get humidity resistant paper.

Handcrafted elements such as natural fibers and organic shapes are more popular than ever. You could feel good about supporting local artisans. Think of it as a house corollary to the locavore movement.

Another trend we love this year, is adding wooden textures to your home and especially to your walls. When you use the natural texture of wood elements, it will make your interior space feel more welcoming and inviting. 5 Ways To Increase Productivity In Your Home Work Space

It is very difficult for a busy person to not get distracted with what is happening around them. This due to minding anything that might cause damage and also impact our lives in any way was important to a human’s early survival. Currently our own bodies stop us from keeping our focus on a task when other people are in view or if you can hear them. Unpredictable noises or views – even a random flash from a shiny light from the outdoors – can decrease our work flow.

Pick an spot for your office to isolate yourself. Make sure that the office area of your house is in far proximity as possible from your house’s social areas, such as family room and kitchen. It might seem obvious, however there are times we would like to be in the center what is going on and would like to assume that we can get our tasks finished. You might think you are advanced at work, carrying a conversation and watching television all at the same time, but the truth is you are not working efficiently. When you cannot hear or see conversations and activity, your mind will not divert its active capacity to listening or looking and you will work better.

Make your yourself less distracted by added walls to separate the space. This type of office might not be the best if there is hardly any sunlight or windows, but being able to keep the door closed and block the noise is the best way to preserve creative energy. When a door is closed, it means that work is in progress and only best interruptions are accepted.

If regular wall separation does not work, you can always figure out another idea. Not all work spaces need a door and four walls. You might prefer your office to be more open or a door and walls might be too costly to build in. If this is the case, you can always use sliding glass doors or ear buds to block out the sounds.

White noise is a better choice than listening to your television from the living or jamming out to music from your ear buds. With music, it is more than likely that your mind will get too into what is playing. You could generate white noise by tuning a good old-fashioned radio between stations, or you can download free audio white noise tracks.

Become brighter. Being in the daylight during the day keeps your circadian rhythms in sync with your geographic location. Do you think that there is no point to this? While your rhythms are out of wack, you become less focused and your injuries heal slower and you go down into a sad way of life. But did you know having zero distractions is more important than getting some sun?

Decrease distractions with high windows. If there is so much going on outside your office window that distractions are inevitable, you should add high clerestory windows. If this fails, put heavy curtains on the lower part of existing windows to block as many distracting sights and noises as possible but still let in sunlight.

Decrease visual complexity. Visual complexity is a complex thing to explain, but it is really important. To prevent cognitive overload when you are doing thoughtful work, it is important that your space does not have too much going on visually.
