Harnessing natural light is the first step in creating a well-lit space. Large windows, skylights, and open floor plans can invite an abundance of sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. In Yorba Linda, where sunny days are prevalent, optimizing natural light can enhance your home's aesthetics and decrease energy costs.

Learn 10 ways to freshen up your kitchen from kitchen remodelling experts at Interior Affairs 714-970-8000.

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is where we spend a lot of our time. It’s where we cook, eat, and gather with family and friends. However, over time, our kitchens can start to feel dull and uninspiring. If you’re looking to freshen up your kitchen, here are the top 10 ways to do it!

Paint your cabinets: Once of the easiest ways to give your kitchen a fresh new look is by painting or refinishing your cabinets. Choose a color or stain that complements your countertops and add a backsplash, making sure the color will create some contrast or blend with the other elements in the design creating a timeless result.

Add new hardware: Swapping out cabinet hardware is one sure way to upgrade the look and feel of a freshened up kitchen. Choose a style that blends with the style of your cabinets as the new hardware will become the jewelry that will give a great finishing touch.

Install new Lighting: good lighting is essential in every kitchen and is another way to update your kitchen. Consider adding under cabinetry lighting and add an extra touch by adding lighting that will light up the walk way into the kitchen. A beautiful chandelier over the island can become the focal point for the entire kitchen.

Upgrade your Appliances: If your appliances are outdated, consider upgrading to newer, more energy efficient models. Not only will they look better, but they also save you money on your energy bills.

Add or change the Backsplash: A backsplash can add color and texture to your kitchen. Choose a material that’s easy to clean and compliments your countertops.

Add an area rug. An area rug can add some personality and warmth to any room but especially to the kitchen rea.

Install new Countertops: If you countertops are worn or outdated, consider replacing them with a new material. Quartz and granite are popular and stand the test of time, especially when the color and style compliments the rest of the elements in the room.

Organize your pantry by taking the time to re-organize with containers and labeling them. You won’t believe how easy it will be to take inventory of your food supply.

Display your Dishes: If you have beautiful dishes or glassware, consider displaying them on open shelving or in a glass front cabinet. This can add a touch of elegance to your kitchen.

The holidays are over, so winter is here full-swing. Here are a few tips on how to set a beautiful dining table in the winter to wow your guests and help you stay in the winter spirit all season long.

Winter Dining Table Tip #1: Use Nature

Who doesn’t love having a few pinecones or beautifully cut logs around the house? Nature provides some beautiful ways to keep your dining table looking great.

A lot of stores now sell scented pinecones, which is a good start. If the scent is too strong for you, try just using a few instead of a lot at once. If you want to completely avoid the scent, you can usually find great options in a local retailer. A lot of retailers sell this type of decor year-round in the home section, so that’s a good place to start.

The same goes with log decor. You can usually find it at big box stores like Target or Walmart. You could also order some from Amazon or a site like Etsy. Speaking of Etsy, you can find some beautiful rustic items made out of wood. Centerpieces, wall art, napkin holders – anything you would want to make your dining table look great.

In addition, evergreen clippings look great, as they can add a bright splash of green color in a world of whites and off-whites.

Winter Dining Table Tip #2: Embrace Snow

If you don’t want to go the rustic look, you can go another direction. Embrace the beauty of pure white snow, and everything that comes with it.

For example, you can have a lot of white place settings on the table. Plates, saucers, mugs, etc. It helps to have some kind of design to avoid it looking too sterile. Maybe the plates have snow flakes on them. Or the place mats can have something like a gold cord weaving around the edges.

You could also add a few holiday ornaments that fit the feel you’re going for. No bright reds or greens. Instead use something like a glittery silver or gold ball that screams sophistication and aren’t too busy.

Dining Table Tip #3: Make It Fun

A third option is to be a bit playful. Your dining table is a place for fellowship and a good time. Why not embrace it and have a theme that’s fun?

Pick some fun or cute part of winter that you enjoy. Do you really like penguins? You can find all kinds of things penguin, from cups and plates to napkins and centerpieces. Are you more of a snowman lover? You can find a lot of snowman-centered things in the market.

Fun doesn’t need to just be for the holidays. You can make the whole season fun at the table if you decorate for it. The internet is your best friend here, since you can find just about anything you need with a quick Google search.

Need some winter decorating tips to keep your home warm and inviting after the holidays? Here are a few things to try.

Winter Decor Tip #1: Embrace White

Even if you don’t live someplace that gets a lot of snow, people generally understand the association of white and winter time. Embrace that.

For example, you can hang a wreath on your front door with white ribbons or flowers. Put a few artificial snowflakes on your mantle or side table. Change your throw pillows to be more of an off white. Drape a white blanket over the back of the couch.

The point isn’t to make your whole home completely white, which can make it feel a bit sterile. But these accents will make it feel like it’s winter both inside and out.

Winter Decorating Tip #2: Go Green

The second color we recommend introducing this time of year is green and there are a few reasons for that.

The first is it helps make your transition out of the holidays a bit easier. Most of us get used to seeing garland around the home and a big green Christmas tree. Even if you don’t have a lot of Christmas decorations, most retail stores, malls and downtown city centers are covered with wreaths and garland. By adding a bit of greenery to your home, you can keep the warm feeling that green plants bring long after Christmas has ended.

Green plants just help us feel connected to nature and the rest of the world. They add a bright, warm feeling to a room. It doesn’t take much – just a few potted plants or a wreath can go a long way.

Winter Decor Tip #3: Bring In Warmth With Fire

Do you associate fire with the winter time? You aren’t the only one. Fire provides the heat and light that helps us get through these dark, cold days. For most people a fire is relaxing and soothing. The sound of the wood crackling in a fire is something that can put most people to sleep.

Even if you don’t light the candles, find a way to get more of them in your home. The most common places are probably in the middle of your table and on the mantle, but be creative. Bookshelves, end tables, sofa tables and coffee tables are all great options.

Don’t ignore the fireplace either. If you don’t actually use it to build fires, you can turn it into a piece of decor. Stack firewood inside and consider placing a few tea lights.

Winter Decorating Tip #4: Use More Natural Things

Some of the best decorations you can use in the winter will come from your backyard. Put a few pinecones in a wooden bowl and place it on your coffee table. Get some fresh garland to drape around the home. Stack some birch logs on a firewood holder. Nature is beautiful – bring some of that beauty into your home!

What are some winter plants that are great for decorating your home during those cold, dreary winter months? You have a lot to choose from, but here are a few of my favorites.

           #1: BROMELIADS

This is a great plant for adding a bit of color and warmth to your home. Bromeliads don’t require a lot of sunlight or water, meaning they thrive in the wintertime. You still need to keep it warm enough that it doesn’t die, but assuming you have central heating and cooling that shouldn’t be an issue.

Bromeliads are great because they come in several different colors. You can find them in pink, purple, orange, yellow and red. These do a great job of contrasting the usual dark colors like gray that we think of during the winter.

           #2: ZEBRA PLANTS

This is a tropical plant so it needs a lot of humidity. They tend to do well in bathrooms which are naturally more humid than the rest of the house.

Zebra plants are always green with white or yellow stripes- hence the name. The contrast is what makes this plant so beautiful. They aren’t dull colors. They really pop against the dark green leaves, making it a beautiful way to add color and warmth to your home during the cold, dark winter.

           #3: PEACE LILIES

These plants are popular because they’re easy to care for and improve the air quality of your home. They always have green leaves and white flowers, so they aren’t the most colorful plants. But the green is always a welcome color in your home during the winter, and the white flower works well with most winter decor. After all, you can’t really go wrong with white.

One thing to keep in mind is that peace lilies don’t need much water. If you’re watering it every single week, that’s probably a bit excessive. Instead just check it once a week and add water if it’s dry.

           #4: ZZ PLANT

This plant is often touted as the easiest to keep alive. While it doesn’t have some of the bright and beautiful colors as others (such as bromeliads,) it does great in low-light conditions. Do you have a room in the house that gets very little sunlight? For example, maybe you have some rooms in the basement with no windows, or you have tall trees on one side of the house. Those are perfect places to place a ZZ Plant.

           #5: CLIVIA

Do you have a room that gets a bit chilly? Maybe you have a covered porch, sunroom or just keep your basement chilly. These are great places to keep a clivia. Clivia plants like to have the air get a little chilly, as that’s when their flowers bloom. Their flowers are usually yellow or orange and go a long way to adding some warmth to your home.

There are plenty of other great winter plants for color and warmth to consider. Christmas cacti are beautiful, succulents add a nice desert-feel to your home, and snake plants are super easy to maintain. If you’d like more personalized advice on how to decorate your home this winter,

Without fail, my friends and family always ask the same question this time of year – “Do you

have any Christmas decorating tips?” I wanted to share a few of my favorites today.

Christmas Decorating Tip #1: Change the Tableware

It’s fine to use the same tableware for most of the year. Maybe you pull out your china or

something nicer for parties, but most people use the same stuff throughout the year.

Christmas is different. It’s a great time to spread some cheer and add a bit more color to your

table by investing in new tableware. From plates and cups to napkins and centerpieces, you can

level up the entire kitchen table.

The best part is you aren’t locked into a certain type of tableware. Does your family love

reindeer? You can find reindeer tableware. More of a Santa-loving family with little kids? Again,

            no problem.

Christmas Decorating Tip #2: Replace Your Candlesticks

If you don’t have a lot of candles around the house, this one may not apply as much. Notice I

said as much, because maybe now’s a good time for you to get some!

Most people keep neutral-colored candles throughout the year. You just can’t go wrong with an

off-white candle, as it goes well in just about any room. Christmas is a great time to replace

those white candles with something more festive. Red and green candles usually do the trick,

and I recommend a mixture of both.

You don’t necessarily have to burn the candles. Some people love the sight and smell of

burning candles this time of year. Others don’t like the smell and just want to enjoy the candles

as decoration. Either way is fine.

Christmas Decorating Tip #3: The Power of Figurines

Putting a few Christmas figurines around the house can help you and your guests get into the

spirit. The obvious example of a Christmas-y figurine is Santa Claus, but there are more to

consider. Nutcrackers, such as the one in the famous play, are tied to Christmas. Reindeer are

            another great choice,

It doesn’t end there though. Anything that makes you feel like celebrating the Christmas season

will work. Polar bears, penguins, cardinals, snowmen, Christmas elves – it’s up to you.

Tip #4: Use Ornaments and Christmas Trees Throughout the House

Christmas ornaments and trees are most of us only have out once a year. As soon as we see

them, our first thought is of Christmas.

There’s no reason you should limit yourself to the placement of these beautiful symbols. Use

            them throughout the house!

           – Put large glass jars full of ornaments on shelves or dressers

           – Place small fake Christmas trees on the mantle, small tables or countertops

           – Have a bowl of ornaments in the middle of your coffee table

You don’t need to do this on every single table of course, but spreading these throughout the

           house will do wonders.

Tip #5: Use the Power of Christmas Flowers

Last but not least, let’s just acknowledge how great poinsettias are. Known as the Christmas

Flower, poinsettias add such a vibrant red to your living space they can’t be ignored. My favorite

place to put them is by the fireplace, but don’t limit yourself. They also look great as

centerpieces, on the mantle, on side tables, or even just standing up in the corner.

Christmas is a great time to invest a little more time and money into making your home

There is nothing quite like your relatives having Thanksgiving dinner with you on your nice table. Incorporating pumpkins in your table decor can really enhance your design.

           Name place cards

Impress your family with fancy place cards. The orange color of pumpkins are a great way to let your guests know where they will be sitting. You should make sure to match the number of pumpkins with your number of guests. Writing the name can be as simple as using a marker and cutting a small pocket in the gord to place the paper. This will bring out an elegant touch to you Thanksgiving dinner.

When it comes to decorating your home for autumn, a fall centerpiece is very important. You should use different sizes and shapes of pumpkin to arrange in the center of your dinner table. Feel free to also add some fake leaves and pine cones to bring a natural feel.

Pumpkin pie is the number one choice for fall dessert. You should let your autumn decorations inspire your cooking as well. Put pumpkins on your kitchen counter or use a glass cake stand and put a pumpkin inside of it. This will bring a warm fall feeling to your kitchen.

Everyone loves the feeling of fall. Football returning Sundays, weather that is fit for soft sweaters, a hot drink and the opportunity to drape your home in fall design during the autumn season are just a few reasons.

It can become difficult to look for fall things that don’t involve the scary Halloween decor or orange pumpkins. How is it possible to theme your house in fall design in the most classy way? Read our tips below.

           Unique White Pumpkins

You should try out decorating the exterior of your home with a series of pumpkins that are painted white. Paint the gourds a greenish color to make it stand out from the typical Halloween colors.

This year, we have noticed that white is becoming more trendy. They are a great piece to your autumn decoration because they are unique and attractive.

White is the new orange. White pumpkins can be a great addition to your elegant fall decor since they’re somewhat unexpected and grab attention. The color orange does not fit well with all homes. Head to your local grocery store and get white pumpkins before they leave!

Use a Wreath Made Out of Grass

The fall season gives you a feeling of earth and nature. You can create a wreath with a dried flower arrangement and use different hues of color that brings out a fall tone on your front door. You can always put fall colored wreaths throughout your home just to make your home seem more autumnal.

           Utilize Corn to Decorate

Corn that is great for decorating, such as Indian corn, is a nice component for a fall centerpiece to use all the way to Turkey Day. We like to use purple corn because it is unique and brings out versatility. Your Thanksgiving table arrangement can include some purple ribbon and napkins for an additional elegant feel.

           Burlap Screams Fall

Even though this may seem crazy, burlap and velvet are a great pair that will give your home different textures and more depth. Rustic and luxury together create a nice fall vibe to your space.

Burla is a nice material to go with because it looks attractive on your fireplace mantel or runner on your Thanksgiving table. Add some velvet into it to really dress up the design.

           Chrysanthemums for the Outdoors

You need to get rid of those orange and average jack o’ lanterns that do not match the front of your home. You have different color options with chrysanthemums. They come in a gold yellow, purple, and even a clean white. This will give your front porch some color.

When it comes to the fall time, you usually see a ton of reds and browns. It is a gorgeous time of year, but it needs a splash of new color. Use purple mums to bring a focal point to your home.

           Copper-Colored Accent

When a lot of warm colors are taking over your house, you can make it look more finished with a copper accent. Autumn is all about making a warm and a welcoming home. A copper accent is perfect for that.

Need To Light Up Your Backyard? Follow These Rustic Lighting Tips

Rustic chic accents were especially made for the backyard, as their bucolic feel fits well with the natural setting. And if you would like to add some instant rustic ambiance and class to your backyard, the best way to do it is to add outdoor rustic lighting using string lights. This might strike you as not classy. You may picture plastic tiki string lights or out of season holiday lights.

           Rustic Bulbs That Are Exposed

A quick way to get a rustic chic look is to opt for a classic exposed filament bulb style. Old style light bulbs give off something of an antique look. But they still add a lot of ambient lighting, thanks to the softer glow of their light source in contract to certain LED types.

You can easily hang the lights from trees to juxtapose the natural plant life with the industrial style light source. They can also look great hanging over eating areas or patios to light up where individuals socialize.

           Combining the Light Types

Another idea for rustic lighting is to go for the exposed bulb style combined with more traditional string lighting. This idea works great with small string lights in either white or a cool color like green. Bolder colors such as multi-color styles, red or orange may look too seasonal, like they belong around a Christmas tree. But white and cool-color lights will give you backyard a timeless, clean-looking feel to your outdoor rustic accent lighting.

           Use Some Rustic Accents

You can also combine your outdoor lighting with your other rustic inspired accent items. An additional classic idea that fits into rustic chic styles is an old style lantern. These could either hang next to string lights or be their own light source. Lanterns with rustic lights in them, such as flameless candles, are also popular for backyard rustic chic styles. These fit well hanging or on nice table settings as accents.

Share Natural Elements with Rustic Lighting

Another idea is to put together rustic lighting sources with accents from nature. Candles are nice for adding an instant classic appeal and a globe design will show them off well. Hanging globe lights from a natural garland design is a classic way to bring in the rustic appeal of natural textures.

You can do this in a variety of ways. You can choose to go with a natural arch and hang the globe lights from the top. Lights like these can sit within natural wreaths on a beautiful table setting.

Hang Rustic Lighting Near the Natural Wood

Old style bulbs and lightly aged wood combined looks beautifully bucolic and classic. You could use this idea in a variety of ways, as well. For example, you may hang exposed bulbs like an outside a barn style shed. Or you may hang string lights over a reclaimed wooden patio table.

Restore Your Hardwood Floors With These Tips

If you are fortunate enough to have original hardwood floors, you should consider restoring their original beauty. Read more here!

Wood flooring has a great charm and usually add coziness and a nice feel to any room. Wood floors are great for both traditional or modern spaces. This is why many people who own a home use hardwood floors in both the kitchen and bathroom.

If you are currently lucky enough to have wood flooring that is original, you should think of planning to restore it’s natural charm. Read on to find some tips to help you with this.

Should You Coat or Finish Your Floors?

If your hardwood floors begin to look dreary, they could be new again through coating your floors. A coat to maintain the floor will need a cleaning on the current finish, then sanding it in a light manner. You will just need an application of a new coat of hardwood floor finish after doing this.

We recommend a complete sanding and refinish when there is a scratch, dent and other damage to the hard wood flooring. We also recommend this process if the finish is worn away and the bare wood is now exposed. This might be the case if you buy a fixer upper home. And there is an additional benefit to doing a complete sand and refinish. Sanding the floor back to raw wood is the best way to change the coloring of the flooring.

Make Sure to Not Use the Incorrect Tools

Wood floor restoration begins when you sand the flooring. This will strip away the finish from before and take out the surface level dents and scuffs. However, if you attempt to sand the floor with the power supplies you have at home, the floors will most likely be sanded uneven. It is possible that you can greatly damage the hardwood by doing this.

           Do Sand It Unevenly

But even if you utilize a drum sander, there is no guarantee that you will not make mistakes if you are not careful. Sanding it unevenly could leave spots of old stains or finish. And then these areas will unsuitable for refinishing.

Be Aware of Edging That Is Improper

Be advised that a drum sander can’t get close enough to your baseboards or walls to sand them. To get to these areas, you will not need an edger. You will also need to be patient when using the edger. Make sure not to rush these areas because it will end up in a noticeable color and texture difference around the edge of the room with a higher risk of degradation.

Notice Wood Dust That Is Lingering

The sanding process will make a lot of wood dust. Make sure to keep this in mind when you are applying the stain and finish to your floors. Thoroughly clean your floors first. If you do not clean them, these particles will end up embedded in the stain and finish. You should also vacuum up as much dust as possible, then give your entire space a detailed cleaning before applying any kind of stain and finish.

Make Sure to Not Use the Wrong Products and Materials

Many items sold in stores say that they can restore hardwood floors to its original state. You should only buy products that are made for your certain type of hardwood. If you pick the wrong stain for finishing, it can make your floors look unattractive. And if that is not bad enough, the wrong product can result in accelerated wear and tear or an off color.

Summer is sadly about to come to an end. While the temperatures dropping outside, things are heating up inside with the new hot fall interior design trends. Here are some of our favorite trends and ways you could incorporate them into your home.

Bright Colors Are Making a Coming Back

Neutrals such as beige, gray, and taupe are still popular. But we are seeing more bright colors on walls and in fabrics, especially in blues. Rich cobalt and vibrant turquoise are very popular. You should ayer intense hues together to add warmth to any room. If it starts to be too dark, just throw in some additional lighting to brighten it up.

           Wallpaper Is Not Going Away

Wallpaper will continue to grow in popularity. If you are reluctant to do a whole room, just cover a single wall for small a pop of color, texture, or pattern. And lots of people are now papering powder rooms. You could even get humidity resistant paper.

Mix and Don’t Match in the Kitchen

We see more and more people using a mix of surfaces and facings in kitchens instead of the standard matching cabinetry. Adding new and old furniture gives the space a unique look. Reclaimed wood is still a huge trend in flooring, cabinet fronts, countertops and furniture. With the deep colors that change and improve with wear and time, it is perfect for kitchens.

Rustic salvaged metal is also very popular, especially when used in lighting fixtures, such as Edison-style lightbulbs in exposed-wire shades, and in modern furniture with skinny metal legs, such as an old museum and library style file and display cabinets.

           Add Handcrafted Items

Handcrafted elements such as natural fibers and organic shapes are more popular than ever. You are seeing them everywhere in the house, from pottery in the kitchen to woven textiles throughout the home. One of a kind products will add character and originality to the home. You could feel good about supporting local artisans. Think of it as a house corollary to the locavore movement.

           Invite Wooden Textures

Another trend we love this year, is adding wooden textures to your home and especially to your walls. When you use the natural texture of wood elements, it will make your interior space feel more welcoming and inviting. Whether in your living room or entrance, printed wood graphics and are a gorgeous way to incorporate this trend.

5 Ways To Increase Productivity In Your Home Work Space

Put your home office as far away as possible from your house’s social areas, such as family room and kitchen. Read more here!

It is very difficult for a busy person to not get distracted with what is happening around them. This due to minding anything that might cause damage and also impact our lives in any way was important to a human’s early survival. Currently our own bodies stop us from keeping our focus on a task when other people are in view or if you can hear them. Unpredictable noises or views – even a random flash from a shiny light from the outdoors – can decrease our work flow.

Pick an spot for your office to isolate yourself.

Make sure that the office area of your house is in far proximity as possible from your house’s social areas, such as family room and kitchen. It might seem obvious, however there are times we would like to be in the center what is going on and would like to assume that we can get our tasks finished. You might think you are advanced at work, carrying a conversation and watching television all at the same time, but the truth is you are not working efficiently. When you cannot hear or see conversations and activity, your mind will not divert its active capacity to listening or looking and you will work better.

Make your yourself less distracted by added walls to separate the space.

This type of office might not be the best if there is hardly any sunlight or windows, but being able to keep the door closed and block the noise is the best way to preserve creative energy. When a door is closed, it means that work is in progress and only best interruptions are accepted.

If regular wall separation does not work, you can always figure out another idea. Not all work spaces need a door and four walls. You might prefer your office to be more open or a door and walls might be too costly to build in. If this is the case, you can always use sliding glass doors or ear buds to block out the sounds.

White noise is a better choice than listening to your television from the living or jamming out to music from your ear buds. With music, it is more than likely that your mind will get too into what is playing. You could generate white noise by tuning a good old-fashioned radio between stations, or you can download free audio white noise tracks.

           Become brighter.

Being in the daylight during the day keeps your circadian rhythms in sync with your geographic location. Do you think that there is no point to this? While your rhythms are out of wack, you become less focused and your injuries heal slower and you go down into a sad way of life. But did you know having zero distractions is more important than getting some sun?

           Decrease distractions with high windows.

If there is so much going on outside your office window that distractions are inevitable, you should add high clerestory windows. If this fails, put heavy curtains on the lower part of existing windows to block as many distracting sights and noises as possible but still let in sunlight.
