A transitional modernistic getaway! Relocating from Chicago, this couple decided to retire to Anaheim Hills, California to be closer to family. They requested a modern feel with traditional flair! After they purchased their home, we worked with them while they were still in Chicago to get the process going and get the work done before they completed their move. We gutted the living room to be able to start from scratch and give the room a complete transformation.
To start, we put a fresh, warm color on the walls to help open up the space and also give it a crisp backdrop for the rich colors in the new wood flooring and kitchen cabinetry. Then, we moved onto the furniture. This is where we were able to keep things traditionally inspired while adding modern flair. The sofa anchors the room with its warm, taupe chenille and pops of teal in the pillows. The armless chairs were done in a silk stripe and add drama with their unique carved wood backs. In the center, we added a cocktail ottoman in a vinyl that gives it a pretty sheen while also being practical as it is easy to clean.
For the window treatments, we decided to go with a classic style. They are made out of a beautiful silk stripe that reflects all of the colors used in the design of the room. We chose to create a valance with swags and cascades while adding traversing sheers that could be closed while still allowing soft light to filter through. The style is traditional but with a twist of modern chic that compliments the overall design of this classic room.
The fireplace and custom built in entertainment center create a dramatic focal point in this living room. The fireplace is a unique corner fireplace and we wanted to highlight it as a key feature in the room. We did this by redoing the surround in glass tile mosaic that leads up to a custom wood mantle. Inset in the mantle is accent lighting that shines down to highlight the glass tile and also shines up to showcase the custom painted art piece hanging above the fireplace. We had this art piece custom painted to tie in all the colors in the space and it is a large 72 inch high canvas that fills the space and accents the high ceilings while becoming a focal point over the mantle. Next to the fireplace is an entertainment center that houses their television as well as hides the other electronic components for a nice clean look.
The accessories help make the entire room come together as the finishing touches. We love the beveled mirrors over the sofa. They reflect the newly constructed fireplace wall and the custom artwork and also reflect the outdoors, bringing in light. We also added greenery throughout the space to help soften it.
On the other side of the room is the kitchen, where the client wanted to make some changes whole keeping the cost down. To accomplish this, we upgraded the countertops to granite and stained their existing oak cabinetry in a rich, dark finish. We also noticed there was no place to really sit down and have breakfast. Our solution was to make a pass through bar area and add counter stools. They now have a place to enjoy cozy meals together.
Once we were don’t with this remodel, our clients were delighted with the way it turned out and were happy to move into a completed space without having to live in a construction zone. They love the way the room turned out and so do we!
